Shore Excursions - Boat Rides You Might Like
For a variety of reasons, you might prefer to have your water adventure be above the surface with someone else driving (steering?), and if you can sip a nice drink along the way, so much the better. Like other examples here, these excursions may not all be available on the particular cruise you take.
Packing For Your Caribbean Cruise. Video library covers how to pack like a cruising pro.
The Speed Boat Ride
These rides are usually an option that is part of a beach trip or a stingray encounter excursion. In this case, you can select the option of being transported there on a super-fast speed boat (and we mean fast.). Part of your journey to your excursion is a slow-paced cruise around some local sights, and the last part is an eye-ball sticking blast over the waves. This boat will absolutely pin your ears back. It adds $24 onto the cost of the excursion (hey, somebody has to pay for the gas!). If you feel the need for speed, go for it.
Glass Bottom Boat Tour
If you’re worn out from too much partying and you want to see some amazing sights but you’re not up for exerting yourself, this is your deal. Glass – bottomed boats are cool. It is a boat with sections of glass (or other suitable transparent material) below the waterline allowing passengers to observe the underwater environment from within the boat. As any diver can tell you, once you break the surface of the water, like you do when looking through a dive mask, things get very clear. In addition, the particular glass used in these boats is magnified, so it looks like the bottom, which might be 100 feet below, is right next to you. These tours might also include beverages (as in Bahama Mama’s) and snacks, so you don’t have to let up on the indulgence even for boat ride. The cruises through the harbor, which is visually interesting in itself, but then it goes out into the sea and cruises over reefs and ship wrecks. Definitely worth the look, especially if you’re worn out from partying!
Party Boat
What do you get when you take about 50 people, give them all the rum punch they can drink and play steel drum music the whole time? Yep, that’s right. If you don’t get enough partying on board (are you crazy?), you can supplement your intake with this little tour. Party boats sometimes are just the boat cruise itself, and sometimes they land at a beach where you can play in the sun and water and maybe even have a beach cookout. Want to get an early start on your partying for the day? Okay, you asked for it!
Racing Experience
For sailing enthusiasts, or those who just dig the gracefulness and romance of those multi-million dollar racing yachts, give this “boat ride” a close look. It’s availability is limited to ports that are lucky enough to have a couple of ex-America’s Cup racing yachts tied up near by. Passengers are encouraged (but not required) to take the helm, grind a winch, punch a stop watch...or just sit back, relax and enjoy. The trip suits people of all experiences and abilities and is suitable for kids as young as 7 years old. After getting checked out by your racing boat crew, you'll have a couple of hours to show off your sailing skills as you attempt to outwit and outrace the opposing yacht. Though these excursions are relatively new to the ship’s excursion menus, they are already very popular and are catching on fast. Book early.
Deep Sea and Bottom Fishing
This isn’t exactly a “boat ride”, though it obviously happens on a boat (duh.) But, man oh man, for those who love the thrill and anticipation of pulling in a feisty catch while cruising the breath-taking expansive of the open sea, this is a particularly rewarding experience. The indescribable beauty of those blue Caribbean waters and the balmy tropical climate are a fisherman’s delight. The Caribbean is world famous for sport fishing. All of the exciting big game fish - Blue and White Marlin, Sailfish and Swordfish - can be caught in the warm tropical waters. The region is equally famous for some of the best eating fish, such as Mahi-Mahi, Wahoo and Grouper.
If you like fishing but aren’t a big fan of spending hours on a small boat with no land in sight, or if you’ve given up on fishing because you never catch anything, you might want to spend a few hours trying some bottom fishing. Your boat will take you out and “park” over the reefs a couple miles off shore (in sight of land) and you get to spend a couple of hours dangling your hook in the water and snagging your share of snapper, yellow-tail and porkies. It’s not guaranteed that you’ll catch a fish, but the odds are so high (about 80% of the people do catch fish when bottom fishing) that if you don’t, you really are cursed and you should never pick up a fishing rod again for the rest of your life.
